Cardiff to Heathrow: Coach, Train or Private Transfer?
Heathrow is about 135 miles from Cardiff, roughly two and a half hours by road. There are three main ways to make the trip, and the right one depends on your flight time, your luggage and how many of you are travelling.

By coach
National Express runs direct coaches from Cardiff city centre to Heathrow, with the fastest taking about 2 hours 50 minutes. Services stop at the Central Bus Station for Terminals 2 and 3, and at Terminal 5, with some also calling at Terminal 4. It is usually the cheapest option for one person, but you need to get to the coach stop with your luggage, and departure times may not suit your flight.
By train
The usual rail route is Great Western Railway from Cardiff Central to Reading, then the RailAir bus to Heathrow, taking around 2 hours 35 minutes before any waiting. You can also continue to London Paddington and take the Heathrow Express, which reaches Terminals 2 and 3 in about 15 minutes. Both routes mean at least one change with your cases, and very early departures are hard to reach by rail.
By private transfer
A pre-booked transfer collects you from your door and drops you at your terminal, at whatever time your flight needs. For a family or a group, one fixed price shared between everyone often compares well with several coach or rail tickets. It also takes the stress out of a 4am start.
Ibex Shuttle runs Cardiff to Heathrow transfers from £260 + VAT (£312 inc. VAT) in an executive saloon. Our 16-seat minibus is £495, which works out at around £31 each for a full group. We track your flight on the way back, so your driver is there when you land even if you are delayed.
Which should you choose?
- Travelling alone with light luggage: the coach is hard to beat on price.
- Leaving from near Cardiff Central at a sociable hour: the train works well.
- Family, group, early flight or lots of luggage: a private transfer is usually the simplest and often the better value.
